On February 10, 2007, the first annual benefit event, The Zebra Ball - Stars for the Stripes, was held at The Peninsula Chicago to support The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization with a mission to encourage and support research in addition to educating the general public and healthcare professionals regarding carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors.

In conjunction with our fourth annual event of The Zebra Ball - Stars for the Stripes, Mayor Daley issued a proclamation that designates the month of February 2010 as Carcinoid Cancer/NETs Awareness Month in Chicago.

Zebra stripes are used to symbolize rare or “camouflaged” conditions. In medical schools as a reminder to consider uncommon alternatives when making a diagnosis, students are told, “When you hear hoof beats don't assume it's a horse, it might be a zebra.” Wearing a zebra pin or a zebra-striped bracelet or ribbon shows your support to promote awareness and to fund the education and research needs related to carcinoid cancer.

On average, a new case of carcinoid cancer/NET is diagnosed every 45 minutes in the United States?

Over 90% of all carcinoid/NET patients are incorrectly diagnosed and treated for the wrong disease?

From initial onset of symptoms the average time to proper diagnosis exceeds five years?

The majority of specialists are not aware of current diagnostic and treatment options?

Abdominal pain, flushing, diarrhea, wheezing, bloating, heart palpitations, weakness, skin rash, and heartburn are the most prevalent carcinoid/NET symptoms?
